A legendary excursion

Dive into

The Great Blue Hole

What’s included?

Three dives

Our Blue Hole trip includes three dives. The first scheduled dive is the Blue Hole, where you can dive to 40 meters or 24 meters depending on your certification level or dive experience. The second dive will be at Halfmoon Caye Wall, then we stop at Halfmoon Caye for lunch. Afterward, the final dive will be at the Long Caye Aquarium.

Food

On departure we offer a standard full breakfast of seasonal fruits, eggs, toast, butter, & jam. Lunch is made available after dive two, where our vessel will have lunch on the island of Halfmoon Caye with a standard Belizean lunch of rice and beans and stewed chicken. Divers with other preferences or dietary restrictions should consider packing their own lunch for the trip.

Dive Computers

We are one of the minority of shops that offers dive computers as a standard part of their gear. We are committed to making sure that all divers can verify their depth and NDL at any point during a dive and we find that this is especially important on the Blue Hole trip

About the tour

The Great Blue Hole is located inside the Lighthouse Atoll reef system. There are only four atolls in the western hemisphere and Belize is proud to have three of them within our waters. To get to the Blue Hole from Caye Caulker it is a journey of about two and a half hours as this atoll is our most remote reef system. Our 3 dive tour begins at 5:15 AM where you will be served breakfast before beginning the journey to the first dive site for the day. This tour includes three fantastic dives. The first dive will be inside the Blue Hole. Depending on your dive experience and certification level, you will either do 40 meters or 24 meters.

The Blue Hole does not play host to an abundance of wildlife compared to the reefs surrounding it as it is just a limestone cave. However, on occasion divers may see sharks or rays in around the rim of the Blue Hole. Despite that, the Blue Hole has a grandeur that eludes many divers. It is a geological dive. Diving into the Blue Hole is diving into a frozen moment in time when the sea levels were much lower, allowing the stalactites to form. It’s greatness lies in its history and the mysteries surrounding its formation. Due to its depth, this dive is normally about 23 minutes.

After the first dive, your next stop will be a site off the coast of Half Moon Caye, where you will dive the incredible reef aptly named Half Moon Wall. These subsequent dives are centred on the beauty of the reefs in this area. At Half Moon Wall you will get to dive a stunning reef wall crowned with coral mounds and pillars. On this dive you may get to see reef sharks, eagle rays, turtles, and on even rarer occasions, hammer head sharks. However, always remember that there is never a guarantee. In total, this dive will be about 45 minutes including your safety stop. After this dive, your next stop will be at Half Moon Caye for lunch. During lunch, we set foot on land for the first time after departing Caye Caulker. Half Moon Caye is a UNESCO natural monument and most of the island remains undeveloped and untouched. After enjoying lunch the tour then moves on to the last dive for the day.

About 10 minutes away from Half Moon Caye is another island called Long Caye. Off the coast of this island is where you will do your last dive of the trip. This final site is called The Long Caye Aquarium, or The Aquarium. This location boasts stunning wall dives as well, but their formation is different from the ones at Half Moon Caye. At this site, take the time to look for the smaller marine life. There is an entire small-scale universe everywhere you look if you pay close attention. It is possible to see marine life interacting with each other at cleaning stations while red banded shrimp may come out of their coral crevices to take a look at passing divers. Juvenile and adult fish are in abundance and you may even see turtles or eagle rays. In total this dive will also be about 45 minutes including your safety stop. At the end of this dive, we prepare to head back to Caye Caulker where you may find yourself in need of a nap. Hopefully by the end, with just a bit of luck, you will have had an unforgettable experience.

Sea Sickness?
Be prepared

Even if you don’t normally get sea sick, the journey to and from the Blue Hole can be choppy and, due to our prevalent east-south-east wind you are liable to get motion-sickness. Stock up on anti motion sickness tablets before the trip and try to avoid alcohol the night before

How Many Dives?
Know your number of dives

Please bear in mind that divers who want to do the dive to the recreational limit of 40 Meters, at the Blue Hole dive site, must have at least 25 logged dives. If you do not have 25 logged dives then you need your Advanced Open Water Certification or equivalent. Divers without the afformentioned will be limited to 24 Meters
